(05/27/2010) – Tokyo, Japan – Tokyo Disneyland recently announced the July 1st, 2010 opening of «Captain E.O.», the 1980′s musical space film starring the late Michael Jackson. In a temporary tribute to the singer, Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California reopened «Captain E.O.» in their Tomorrowland earlier this year; Epcot in Orlando also recently announced plans to open temporary tribute viewings to the public.

The 18-minute film debuted in the mid-1980′s at all three Disney parks (and Disneyland Paris in 1992), quickly proving to become one of Disney’s most popular franchised attractions. The use of 3D imagery in theme park entertainment was a first for «Captain E.O.», a film concept created by Michael Jackson and Walt Disney Imagineering. On record as the most expensive music video ever made on a minute-to-minute comparison, «Captain E.O.» was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced by George Lucas; it also stars Anjelica Houston. The show features two original Michael Jackson recordings, «We Are Here (To Change the World)» and «Another Part of Me», the later of which appeared on Jackson’s Bad album.

The Tokyo Disneyland screening will be held in the original theater, replacing MicroAdventure! («Honey, I Shrunk the Audience» in American parks), a 3D film starring Rick Moranis. «Captain E.O.» will run through June 2011; Disney has not yet announced if MicroAdventure! would return.
